On-line Tennis Court Reservations

AAC now uses an on-line tennis court booking system. Members can now login to a website to view existing court reservations and to book a court. This provides an easy way for everyone to view the reservation sheet up to 30 days in advance. ALTA and USTA matches, as well as rain make ups, will continue to be set up by Coach Terre. If you would like to play a T2 match or simply hit with a friend, online reservations will be the way to go.

The same court reservation and cancellation policies apply as before. If you book a court and do not cancel in advance, court reservations will no longer be a benefit available to you if found to be a continuous problem.

To book a court, follow these simple directions:

• Go to www.reservemycourt.com.
• Follow the <Player Sign-Up> link on our front page and then select <Alpharetta Athletic Club> as your home facility.
• Setup your username and password.
• Once logged in you can go to the Reservation link to look at the schedule or book a court.

Handicap

ALPHARETTA ATHLETIC CLUB / HANDICAP COMMITTEE

Message to Golf Members

Dear Fellow Golf Members,

Greetings from your Handicap Committee! Now that we belong to the combined organization Alpharetta Athletic Club, the Handicap Committee’s mission is more important than ever. The Committee has several goals, but the two most important are:

  1. Review the golf membership to ensure that all stated GHIN handicaps are accurate.
  2. Communicate actions of the Handicap Committee to the membership so that every member knows handicapped club competitions are fair and everyone participating has a realistic chance to win.

Of course, to achieve these goals we must educate all members on the handicap system and ensure that everyone is entering all of their scores in a timely manner using Equitable Stroke Control. Most inaccuracies in the GHIN handicap are unintentional due to lack of knowledge about the rules, posting requirements, etc. Sometimes there is a lack of discipline in posting scores in a timely manner. And of course there may be a few blatant cases of "sandbaggers".

Handicapping 101

Here are a few basic responsibilities you have as a golf playing member of the club:

1. Play by the rules of golf.
Know the rules! Frequently broken rules:

  1. Taking a mulligan after a bad tee shot
  2. Fluffing up your lie in the rough or otherwise using the foot wedge
  3. Discovering an offline tee shot is indeed out of bounds and saying "I’ll just drop here and play my third shot". Hit a provisional when there is any doubt.
  4. Giving yourself putts which are not really gimmes.

All of these transgressions make you a "reverse sandbagger" — i.e., you’re not really as good as your GHIN index says you are. This is not as serious as inflating your handicap, but it is unfair to your partners in an "ABCD" competition. You are the "A" player based on your handicap but you score like a "C" player.

2. Follow USGA Handicap System Scoring and Posting Requirements.
Frequently broken rules:

  1. Not posting every round.
  2. Not posting partial rounds.
If 13 or more holes are played the player must post an 18-hole score. If 7 to 12 holes are played the player must post a 9-hole score.
  3. Unfinished holes and conceded strokes
A player must estimate and record his most likely score, not the minimum or the maximum under ESC.
  4. Understand and use Equitable Stroke Control.
ESC provides guidelines for the maximum score you can take on an individual hole. There is a chart explaining this in the clubhouse next to the GHIN computer.
  5. Otherwise posting erroneous scores.

This is not an exhaustive list - these are examples to give you a feeling of the types of rules you must follow so that all handicapped competitions, whether they be club level, MGA or LGA sponsored, or just a points game within your group, are equitable to all participants. The Alpharetta Athletic Club golf staff is prepared to answer any questions you might have. Also feel free to email the members of the Handicap Committee.

The "USGA Handicap System Manual" is available for free online viewing at http://www.usga.org/playing/handicaps/manual/handicap_system_manual.html. You can purchase a copy of the manual and other related publications by going to http://www.usga.org/playing/handicaps/handicaps.html and clicking on "More Publications from the USGA Publications Store".

Not Posting Rounds Played

The Handicap Committee in conjunction with the golf staff conducted complete audits of all rounds played on several occasions last year. We compared the daily Tee Sheet to the scores posted in the GHIN system by end of day. We found that on a Saturday a fairly high percentage of rounds were posted in the morning. But in the afternoon less than half the rounds were posted. Non-posting is the single biggest problem we have at Alpharetta Athletic Club. We plan to conduct more random audits this year and to post penalty scores for rounds not posted.

Those members who habitually fail to post will not be allowed to participate in club tournaments.

Penalty Scores for Rounds Not Posted

The Crooked Creek Handicap Committee has decided to impose a penalty score if a member is known not to have posted a round played. Such a score will appear in his scoring history with an "M" indicating "Modified".

  1. At this time we have not yet developed an automated system to detect all rounds not posted every day. However, rounds not posted will be detected in the following situations:
    • Days when scorecards are collected
    • Days when random checks are done
    • Other spot checks, such as collecting all cards in a group
    • A Handicap Committee member becomes aware that an individual did not post
  2. When a member is known to have not posted, he will be given 3 full days to post the score. For example, if he played at any time on Saturday, he has until close of business on Tuesday to post the score. Note: the score can be posted either in the clubhouse or on the internet at http://www.ghin.com/. Go to that web site and click on "Post Online". You must know your GHIN number to use this method. Finally, the member can call the clubhouse and ask anyone on the golf staff to post a score for him.
  3. If the member has not posted his score by the end of the 3rd day following, he will be assigned a penalty score equal to the lowest Handicap Differential and Ratings in his Scoring Record. A player’s Scoring Record is the last 20 scores he has posted, plus any eligible tournament scores. This procedure is consistent with section 8-4.b of USGA Handicap System Manual.

This is not as complicated as it sounds – the Scoring Record is exactly what is displayed on the GHIN computer when an inquiry of a member’s scoring history is made.

  4. The member has the right to appeal to the Handicap Committee to remove the penalty score. He must make the appeal in writing (an email is okay) and his appeal will be reviewed at the next regularly scheduled Handicap Committee meeting. The member does not need to be at the meeting - he can state his case in writing. The Committee will consider the request and vote on it. If the member wins the appeal the actual score shot will be posted and the penalty score will be removed. The Committee meets once a month during the golf season – ask for the date of the next meeting.

SGA

The AAC provides a time and a place to play and to practice. Now that you’ve got the place, here are the opportunities dedicated to senior tee times.

Senior Points Game

Open to all club members 50 years and older, the Senior Points Game is based on a target point system matched against your handicap. The entry fee to participate at the East Course is $5 for each outing. A pay out to the top five (5) players on each given day is awarded from the entry fees. Entry to the West Course Points Game is $10 for each outing.

East Course point games are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and West Course point games are held on Mondays and Thursdays. Tee times for both courses begin at 10 am and all participants need to register each week with the pro shops by calling 770-475-9300 (East Course) and 770-410-9360 (West Course). Golfers will need to register by noon Saturday for the Monday game, noon Sunday for the Tuesday game and noon on Wednesday for the Thursday games.

League Play

18 Hole Tuesday League

All 18Hole players must have an established USGA handicap of 40 or less, but will play to no more than a 36 handicap on Play days. This includes a transfer of a handicap from a previous course.     The 18 hole league generally plays on Tuesday morning, (if changed, noted on schedule) starting at 9:00 a shotgun start. League play begins the first Tuesday following the opening luncheon in the spring (Saturday, March 20) and ends with the closing brunch in the fall (Saturday, November 20).  The pro shop does the pairings.   Sign-up to play will be done on line at AACLGA.com.  Cancellations must be made 24 hours in advance.

The pro shop will collect a $5.00 cash fee each play day. This fee is only optional in individual play days.  This money will be used for cash prizes that will be awarded at lunch that same day.  The Queen of Clubs day winners will be paid at the Queen of Clubs Shot-out at the end of the season.

All players should plan to arrive 30 minutes before the starting time in order to familiarize themselves with the game of the day, warm up and be in the carts five minutes prior to the start.  Chip-in money will be collected prior to the start of play.  This is optional.

One score card will be kept for play each week.  This will be the game card provided by the Play Day chairperson.  Score cards will be found on the carts.  This score card must be kept and signed by a fellow player or marker.  Cards will be turned in to the chairperson after play; another card should also be kept.h2

All players must enter their official (adjusted if needed) score in the computer each week.  Weekly play will not be termed tournament play.  Only true tournament scores will be entered as such.

18 Hole Friday League

We hope to encourage more play at the West Course.  This group will play each Friday as listed on Schedule.   Check web for days and times.  All players should arrive early to familiarize themselves with the game of the day.  A game will be played each week.  All sign-up will be done on the website at AACLGA.com.  Cancellations should be made 24 hours in advance on the site.  The Playday Chairperson is Barbara Warren.  All questions and concerns should be directed to her at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

18-Hole Saturday League

All 18 Hole Saturday players must have an established USGA handicap of 40 or less. League play begins the week after the opening brunch in the spring and ends with the closing brunch in the fall.  Generally, play will be limited to 3 foursomes each week.  Tee times will be in the morning and will vary each week, they will be found on the website.

Sign-up will be done on line at AACLGA.com.  You should be signed up by Friday for Saturday play.  Cancellations must be made 24 hours in advance on line.

Each week a game will be played and $5.00 will be collected by the play day chairperson.  Money will be awarded at lunch to the winners. All players must enter their official adjusted if needed score in the computer each week.  Weekly play will not be termed tournament play.

New this year to Saturdays, is the ACE OF CLUBS tournament. This event will be played the first Saturday of each month, unless otherwise noted.  $5.00 will be collected and kept until the shoot out in October.  This will be tournament play. A coveted Ace of Clubs bag tag will be awarded to the monthly winner, once you win this you are not eligible to win again, but may play in other Month’s Aces and will play in the shoot-out. h2 The Saturday Play Day chairperson is Susan Riley.  All questions concerning the Saturday League can be directed to her.  .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Course Information

Alpharetta Athletic Club has two 18 hole Championship Golf Courses. Located only 5 miles apart in the Milton area, these courses offer members variety. The courses have different layouts, and personalities all their own.

East Course

Alpharetta Athletic Club’s East Course, offers an 18 hole golf course that will challenge golfers of all skill levels. The East Course is located in the beautiful city of Milton only minutes away from GA 400 in the North East outskirts of Atlanta. The East course is a par 72 Michael Riley design, that plays nearly 7,000 yards from the back tee.  Featuring undulating greens, tee shots that you must pay attention to (out of bounds on every hole), and challenging approach shots. The East Course is regarded by many to be the premiere Championship golf course in the greater Atlanta area.

West Course

Although the par 70, Willard Byrd design tips out at 6,100 yards, the West Course will test the patience of any golfer. This risk-reward golf course gives you the choice to either shape a fairway wood to a narrow fairway or go for the gusto and let it rip. With narrow tee shots and pure rolling stamp size greens, the West Course has something for golfers of all playing abilities.

Kerry Graham, AAC Fitness Specialist

Kerry has been involved in the health & fitness industry for over 25 years. He grew up in a family health, racquet, and fitness center in Connecticut where he divided his time between serving clients as a certified personal trainer, a racquetball/tennis coach and being an aspiring racquetball professional.

After graduating from the Barney School of Business at The University of Hartford in 1994, Kerry moved to Long Island, NY to train and compete with some of the best athletes in the nation. During his 13 year stay on Long Island, Kerry competed at the amateur and National level as well as was a ranked professional on the International Racquetball Tour for his 9 of his 14 year career. During this time Kerry also held several personal training certifications and was a Fitness Director at a health and racquet club. Kerry’s clients ranged from juniors, who played competitive sports like tennis, golf, lacrosse, baseball and football, to the everyday man or woman who is looking to get in better shape, lose and keep off 20 pounds, play better golf or tennis.

Since moving to Georgia in 2007, Kerry is excited to offer all of his experience and education in fitness and sports to the members of the Alpharetta Athletic Club! No matter what the end result may be you are looking for, Kerry will be able to show you how to get there in the most efficient, safe and effective ways!

Massage Therapy

As members of Alpharetta Athletic Club you can also relax and enjoy a massage after a round of golf or an intense day of training. Numerous studies have shown massage therapy to have an impressive range of physical, mental and emotional benefits.

Our very own expert in therapeutic & deep tissue massage, Monique Rusching, has more than 14 years of experience. Each client walks away having learned about Monique’s focus on the whole person by incorporating diet, nutrition and wellness tips.

While most injuries involve the lower back, neck, shoulders, elbows and hips; tennis players and golfers know that the likelihood of experiencing one of these injuries is amplified. Massage therapy cannot only help to heal an existing injury but can also help to prevent future problems. Our tranquil massage room is just one of the many benefits of being a member of Alpharetta Athletic Club.

What Members Are Saying

I had been going to other massage therapists for three years and was very satisfied with their work. I decided to try Monique due to the convenience of her being available at the Club. I was very pleased to find that she was even more competent than my prior therapists. She has an uncanny ability to find my problem areas even before I remember to tell her and she relentlessly works on the problems until they are resolved. She takes an interest in my total health.

Jim M.

I was in an auto accident which left me with constant pain. I am allergic to pain medication so I had no relief from my pain. Monique not only eased my pain thru massage but gave me advice on how I could help myself with exercise and posture. Monique also took the time from her busy schedule to call and check to see how I was, and if there was anything more she could do for me. It was comforting to have someone care. With her help and expertise I am now able to sleep pain free and am improving to a great extent.

Alice K.

I have used massage therapy every two weeks for approximately 10 years and Monique is extremely good. She can pinpoint exactly where I am hurting simply by her touch/contact with my body and is able to release all tension stored in that area. She is extremely caring about each of her clients. I know this because I have sent many friends to Monique. They also enjoy her capable services and have thanked me profusely for recommending her. The oils and preparations that she uses during massage are of the highest quality. Monique takes extreme pride in her work. I would, without any hesitation, recommend Monique as a very caring, professional and experienced massage therapist.

Talk about synergy! The marriage of the two clubs into one new club ready for the 21st century caused quite a stir. Suddenly, for a very affordable price, people could join a club with a plethora of amenities and two great golf courses.  This was not a reciprocal play plan. This was a marriage of two superb clubs into one super club.

Now, just three short years later, Alpharetta Athletic Club has a reputation as a the complete club, one that has something for the junior, adult, or senior member, one that has something for a single member or an entire family.

Our plan is to be here for years and years – To be a place where generations say they grew up, had fun, and made new friends away from the busy and turbulent real world outside our entrance.

Amenities

Alpharetta Athletic club offers its members a great amenities package including a Fitness Facility, Pool, 36-holes of golf, Message therapy and an active tennis program. This combination of amenities is usually only seen in the up echelon of private clubs in the Atlanta area, and even then not all of them carry all of these great additions. With so many things to do there is something for every member of the family. For more information on the individual amenities please visit the pages to the right.
